A former US congressman has been arrested in Zimbabwe after reports regarding possession of pornography.

According to reports on Tuesday, Mel Reynolds, who is a convicted sex offender, was arrested in the capital Harare on Monday.

“We are with him and we are conducting investigations. That is all I can say at the moment,” said Ario Mabika, a spokesman for Zimbabwe’s immigration department.

Zimbabwean Herald newspaper reported that the former Illinois congressman was arrested at a local hotel after he was found in possession of pornographic videos and pictures.

“I have been in this country 17 times where I have done a lot of work for the people including the fight against sanctions,” the newspaper quoted the former MP as saying.

Other reports said, the congressman’s visa had expired and he was in the country illegally.

In 1995, Reynolds stepped down from the US Congress after he was convicted of statutory rape.
