Sserunkuma Rescues Gor Mahia
Kenya League defending champions Gor Mahia made it two wins in a row after dispatching Mathare United 1-0 at a packed Machakos Kenyatta stadium on Sunday evening.
Once again it was left to the magic of stocky Dan Sserunkuma who scored the all-important goal in what is fast shaping out to be a season for the Uganda international. The 48th minute strike came off a pass by Shaban kenga that left Sserunkuma with the easiest job, placing the ball past Mathare custodian Peter Odhiambo.
Sserunkuma last won the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 2012 and if his exploits is anything to go by, he could once again go for the gong should he maintain the momentum.
At Kenyatta stadium, the match begun on a high note with youngster Joseph Wanyonyi combining well with Sserunkuma and Jared Obwoge upfront but the alert Mathare defense nabbed the danger posed in the fifth minute.
The slum boys had a chance when Daniel Mwaura beat the off-side trap and picked out a wasteful Edwin Ombasa. The late introduction of Patrick Oboya almost bore fruits but there was no Gor player to finish off his move.
The win now propels Gor to position two on six points behind Sony Sugar who have same points but a superior goal difference.
