2 Pupils In Serere Die Of Suspected Poisoning

Police in Serere district is investigating circumstances under which two children died shortly after complaining of stomach pains.

Juma Hassan Nyene, the police spokesperson for East Kyoga region, says the children are suspected to have eaten poison. Nyene says police is investigating whether the children ate poison from their respective primary schools, their home or somewhere else.

Nyene identified the dead as Peter Opolot, a 7 year old pupil of Obulai Primary school in Atira Sub County and James Okiror, 11, a pupil of Atira Clave Primary school. He says both children died at their father, Samuel Echodu’s after developing stomach pain.

The incident occurred on Thursday at 2:00 am in their home and burial was held yesterday at Opiin village, Atira Sub County in Serere district.

Simon Odongo, the LC5 councillor representing Atira Sub County said that the incident is strange and has shocked the relatives and residents of the area.

He pointed out that before the children’s death they ate supper together with their parents. Odongo says the parents of the deceased gave them first aid but within short time the children passed on.

He explained that so far all three children of the same family have died with the same signs. The first child died towards the end of last year after showing similar signs.
