Willy Omodo Omodo, the Northern Uganda NRM youth chairperson has been arrested. Omodo was picked up by Lira police on Saturday evening on the directives of Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police.

Ashraf Chemonges, the Lira District Police Commander declined to reveal details why Omodo was picked up but and instead refered a local media jornalist to Judith Nabakooba, the Police spokesperson.

Omodo is one of the NRM youth leaders who have openly declared their support for the Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi should he seek to contest the 2016 presidential elections. He was part of the three pro-Mbabazi NRM youth leaders including Adam Luzindana and William Seruyinda, who were arrested and  interrogated for hours at the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka early this month.

Judith Nabakooba, the police spokesperson said then, the trio had been arrested following complaints that they were moving round bribing NRM party members.

Police Chief General Kale Kayihura allegedly ordered the arrest.

Omodo’s troubles date back to February 2014 when they denounced the Kyankwanzi- NRM caucus resolution endorsing President Museveni as the sole party candidate in the 2016 elections. After denouncing the resolution, the group then held a press conference Kampala and declared their support for Mbabazi.

However, Mbabazi delinked himself from the youths. Manshur Suwed, the Central North police spokesman says arrangements are underway to transfer Omodo to Kampala. On March 10th, 2014 Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police issued a press release denying reports that police was harassing pro-Mbabazi NRM youth leaders.

  1. Is this Ugandan Police not pro ruling party? Why does Kayihura involve the national police to enforce internal legal issues of the ruling party as if the party does not have a disciplinary unit/department to redress the party conflicts?

  2. Eh, Amana Mbabazi, you are already coiling your tail between your legs?? What will you do come 2016?? YOU PAID THE PIPER, SO CALL THE TUNE, so they say!!
