Sarah Namuwenge, manager public relations and communications at National Water Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has said departments within Mulago Hospital that were cut off on Tuesday last week need to pay the unpaid bills amounting to over sh6bn.
The development caused alarm as disconnecting Mulago would affect its operations leading to loss of lives.
Namuwenge told the media that all bills of other departments are supposed to be paid by Ministry of Health and will not be reconnected until they are cleared.
She said they are already in talks with the hospital management to see how the bills will be cleared. Namuwenge said their team was also on the ground to check low pressures at the facility.
When Red Pepper contacted Mulago spokesperson, Enock Kusasira, he confirmed the facility was in negotiations with the Finance Ministry and NWSC .
“Its true the three parties are talking. Departments like Mwana Mugimu Childrens ward and the Medical and Nursing Schools among others are still off,” Kusasira said.
Some sources reveal that currently, the hospital pays bills for independent institutions including Baylor College of Medicine, Makere University College of Health Sciences, Medical School, Paramedical School and Infectious Disease Institute among other facilities.
