Blick – Gov’t To Sponsor Only Netballers For Africa Youth Games

The government has decided to financially support only the Netball team for the 2014 Africa Youth Championship.

She Cranes“Because of the development, the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) has had no alternative but to trim the teams that will travel to Gaborone, Botswana next month,” William Blick, the President Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) told reporters.

The 2014 Africa Youth Championship which will also act as qualifiers for the 2014 Youth Olympics to take place in China will take place May 22-31.

Blick explained that because of lack of funds and little support from the government they decided to reduce the numbers of athletes who will travel to Botswana. He said they have been preparing several athletes for the competition, but added that the only alternative is to reduce numbers.

The racket games like badminton, tennis and table tennis have all been reduced from four players to one each. Disciplines like athletics and weightlifting have also had the team reduced.
Uganda will enter athletes in Badminton, athletics, basketball, boxing, netball, rugby, swimming, table tennis, tennis and weightlifting.

Top youth badminton player Daniel Mihigo said he is sad that his teammates have been dropped, but added that he will work hard to perform well in Botswana and qualify for the Youth Olympics in China. The African Youth Championship is expected to involve all 54 nations on the continent; attracting 2,500 athletes who will be competing in 22 sporting activities.
