Police in Nakaseke District are investigating circumstances under which four children were burnt to death and three others together with their mother injured seriously on Sunday evening.
This incident happened at around 6pm at Kyaluweesi village in Kiwoko town council, Nakaseke village where Juliet Namugerwa’s house was burnt to ashes and four of her children died in the same incident.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Edward Kyaligonza, the Nakaseke District Police Commander, identifies the victims as Senfuka Sam (8), Nakabuye Joyce (4), Kirumira Rodgers (2.5) and Bakabulindi Isaac (1) who died while Kawooya George (10), Kakande Fred (7), Kalungi Godfrey (12) and their mother Juliet Namugerwa (32) were injured in the incident.
Kyaligonza who visited the scene of crime together with James Okiria the Nakaseke District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) boss says that its suspected Namugerwa had sold a cow at shs 800,000 which the assailant only identified as Ronald wanted to steal.
He says that Namugerwa and Ronald were living together but had separated 2 years ago due to domestic violence.
The Savannah region police publicist Lameck Kigozi says they have received witness testimonies that during the attack, the assailant kept on demanding for 800, 000 shillings which he believed Namugerwa had in the house.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kasana Health Centre IV for autopsy while the injured rushed to Kiwoko Hospital where they are nursing injuries but in critical condition.
According to Moses Senfuka, the Kyaluweesi LCI chairperson, Namugerwa was taking shower in the bathroom while the children were in the house when the incident happened. They were making preparations for Easter celebrations in the evening. Namugerwa was injured during the course of trying to save her children.
Kyaligonza says that police has mounted a search for one Ronald who fled into hiding after the incidence. If caught he will face charges of murder in the courts of law according to Kyaligonza.
