Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement party has reportedly spent Shs4.1 Billion to facilitate the on-going Constituency Mobilization campaign.
The campaign seeks to Popularize President Yoweri Museveni as the party’s sole Candidate in the next general election.
Local media has established that each NRM legislator received at least UGX 4 million to spend in each sub county within their constituencies. Uganda has 1026 Sub Counties.
The campaign follows the February 2014 Kyankwanzi resolution in which members of the ruling party overwhelmingly voted in support of a motion to endorse party chairman Yoweri Museveni as the sole NRM candidate.
The mobilization started last week Friday and it runs throughout the weekend to Monday as indicated by Government Chief Whip Justine Kasule Lumumba in her address to the media recently.
When the media approached her to ascertain the source of funding for the campaign, Lumumba declined to state the figure saying that the MPs are being facilitated by the NRM resource envelope to which they are all collective contributors.
Lumumba said that the campaign is to explain to the electorate what government has been able to achieve and the pending business. It will also explore the laws that have been passed by parliament over the last two and half years and the 22 resolutions that came out of the recent Kyankwanzi retreat.
She added that the MPs will also collect views from their constituents about the party work and challenges. Ultimately, the campaign will enhance party discipline and cohesion and give accountability for the First half of the MPs term of office.
