Police in Mityana have rescued three suspected thieves, who had been arrested by a mob that wanted to lynch them.
The suspects were apprehended around Matte hills, in Kikandwa sub county in Mityana district this afternoon.
Mukasa Simon, one of the local leaders, says the residents found the suspects slaughtering a cow, which they believed to have been stolen from Kikandwa town.
Mukasa says when the residents demanded that the suspects explain why they were slaughtering a cow in the bush. Instead the suspects attempted to run away and hide in the hills.
Residents reacted by mobilising themselves and then giving chase.
During the scuffle, two of the suspects had their both hands cut off before the police from Busunju rescued them.
Okiriya Martin, the criminal investigation Officer at Busunju police station, identified the victims as Lubowa John of Wakiso town and Ssenkya Godfrey of Bukomero town in Kiboga district.
He says the third suspect has still refused to give them his name though he is in custody at Busunju police.
Okiriya says one of the suspects confessed to police that they had a contact in Kikandwa who was informing them of wealthy farmers or farms to rob. The accomplice identified as Bogere Peter, a prominent trader in Kikandwa, has also been arrested.
