Uganda Cup reigning champions SC Victoria University have shown their FUFA Super League peers what to do when a local club gets a chance to showcase and compete with regional giants.
Morley Byekwaso’s side will represent the country in the maiden CECAFA Nile Basin Cup winners’ Cup to be hosted by Sudan from 20h May-5th June, 2014.
SCVU are second on the FSL log and already booked a place in the semis of the Uganda Cup.
CECAFA’s member Associations together with Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt have also been offered the chance to nominate clubs to take part in the tournament.
Federations were asked to nominate teams that won their Knock out Cup tournaments or finished runners up in their respective national leagues.
Basically when such opportunities come calling, local clubs shy away citing lack of finances and tight schedules.
However information from FUFA reveals that Sudan the host nation will cater for all the costs of travel and accommodation for all teams.
“We contacted SCVU and they confirmed participation as the deadline for registration was 15h April, 2014. It is a good tournament that will help our teams and players gain exposure,” FUFA CEO Edgar Watson told the FA’s website.
Once maiden CECAFA Nile Basin Cup winners’ Cup gets off, the regional body are of the opinion of launching CECAFA Champions League signaling a natural death for the now unpopular CECAFA Kagame Club championship.
