Police in Lyantonde are holding 6 notorious highway robbers and hardcore motorcycle thieves.
The suspects in custody are identified as Emanuel Ahimbisibwe, Ashiraf Walukagga, Godfrey Ssewante, Jimmy Sselemba, and Sharif Bwogi.
It is alleged that the group is part of a gang of highway robbers, suspected of terrorizing the districts of Lyantonde, Lwengo, Kalungu, and Bukomansimbi in the greater Masaka region.
Lyantonde District police commander, Henry Mugarura, said that the suspected were netted in an operation carried out in the area following a robbery in which one business woman in Lyantonde was deprived of her belongings.
He further said that the suspects and their accomplices that are still at large have been mounting fake road blocks on major highways in the region to rob passengers.
The police is also investigating reports that the same suspects have been selling stolen motorcycles on loans but subsequently steal and resale the motorcycles when the initial debtors are about to clear their payments.
The suspects confessed to committing the offence revealing other members of the clique who are still on run.
