M7 Appoints Maj. Gen. Levi Karuhanga As New Military Court Chief

Maj. Gen. Levi Karuhanga, the first Commander of AMISON in Somalia has been appointed chairman of the General court martial.  Karuhanga who was appointed by President Yoweri Museveni replaces Brig Moses Ddiba Ssentongo whose one year term of office expired.

Karuhanga has previously served as the overall leader of the Ugandan peacekeeping mission in Liberia and second in command of UN forces in Liberia. He has also served as the commanding officer of the Africa Crisis Response Initiative, in 1997. This was a continental force trained by the US to respond to crisis in Africa.

In 1998, he was appointed Deputy Commander 3rd Division before being made the First Division Commander in 2001.

In 2005 Maj. Gen. Karuhanga was posted to Division Headquarters Command, Kakiri as Divisional Commander before he was appointed and sent to Somalia in 2007 as AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) commander. In 2010, he was appointed Reserve Forces Commander, a position he has held to date.

According to a statement from the UPDF, The former chairman Moses Ddiba Ssentongo will continue with his appointment as Chairman of Wazalendo SACCO, an Institutional SACCO composed of UPDF personnel, their families, Reserve Forces and Staff of Ministry of Defence

Ddiba Ssentongo was earlier in the year re-elected Chairman of the SACCO after completing his previous term where he was also doubling as chairman of General Court Martial.

Other members of the Makindye based court are Lt Col S.A Ochen, Maj Dan Kamugira, Maj David Kidega, Capt Christine Nekesa, Capt Livingstone Musiime and WOI Mijumbi George

The court will also have Capt Fredrick Kangwamu as its prosecutor,    Lt Col Gideon Katinda   as the Judge/Advocate and Capt John Bizimana as its secretary.

Ealy this month, the trials of cases before the General Court Martial (GCM) at Makindye were suspended following the end of Brig. Ddiba’s tenure.
