SC Victoria University Players Share Shs 37Million Cecafa Nile Basin Cash, Return Today

Sports Club Victoria University players and their technical team members are excited after sharing half of the cash prize won at the just concluded Cecafa Nile Basin Cup in Khartoum, Sudan.

The team bagged UGX 75 million (US$30,000) in prize money after defeating AFC Leopards (Kenya) 2-1 in the final played on Wednesday at the Khartoum National Stadium. Team members set to leave Sudan this afternoon were offered half of it in fulfillment of a pledge by the team management.

Team captain Martin Mpuuga said on Thursday evening that players were excited that besides the money, the tournament gave them more exposure and were able to showcase their talents.

Speaking about the final, Mpuuga said they worked hard as a team and decided they had to win the trophy for Uganda despite starting the tournament as underdogs.

The Ugandan side that represented the country at the 2014 CAF Confederations Cup before falling to Don Bosco of DR Congo won all its games in the tournament and only drew goalless with Sudan League Champions El Merreikh in the Group stage.

The inaugural tournament attracted 11 teams from Uganda, Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
They touch down at Entebbe International Airport today at 8pm aboard Kenya Airways.
