Samuel Namuli Lutoto, the Sironko Town Council LC 3 chairperson is in trouble for alleged theft of two metallic culverts.
He was picked up on Wednesday evening from the town council offices on the orders of William Omara, the Deputy Sironko Resident District Commissioner.
Omara explains that the culverts were meant for use in the on-going construction of the 3.5 Km Mt. Elgon Road in Sironko Town council, which is being undertaken by Kawama Construction Limited.
According to Omara, his office got a tip off that Lutotoloaded the culverts on the town council tractor registration number LG 0008-106 with on Friday last week and sold it to Mafu Garage at 200, 000 shillings.
He reportedly picked up the money through Godfrey Mukwano, the tractor driver.
On his arrest, Mukwano said he was acting on the orders of the LC 3 chairperson, which prompted police to pick him up too.
David Agaba, the Sironko District Police Commander says during the operation they recovered a gate and eight pieces of iron sheets made out of the culverts from Mafu Garage whose owner is on the run.
Omara has directed police to investigate Alex Gidudu, the Sironko town council engineer who is believed to have had a hand into the theft of the culverts.
He wonders why the engineer who is supervising the road construction failed to report the theft to police. The two suspects are currently being held at Sironko Central Police Station.
Omara castigates the LC III chairperson saying that he should have been at the center of supervising the road works, but turned around to steal materials. Richard Washukira, a resident of the town has welcomed the arrest of the duo.
He says detractors should be held accountable for their action. He says their agricultural produce is rotting in the gardens because of the poor state of roads yet the local leaders are sabotaging efforts to repair the roads.
