Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth will declare the 20th Commonwealth Games open in Celtic Park, home of Scotland’s biggest football club Celtic at 10pm Ugandan time.
Athlete Moses Kipsiro, a double gold medallist at the last games, will be the main medal hope in a 62 sportsmen team captained by weightlifter Charles Sekyaaya.
Today’s ceremony will mark the start of where 4500 athletes from the 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth will over the next 10 days contest for honours in 17 disciplines.
President Yoweri Museveni’s offered a raising the daily pay from $72 to $100.
The first group of Uganda’s contingent to Glasgow left last week after receiving allowances for three of the 14 days that they will be paid for at the Games. Most of that money was however left in Uganda for home upkeep following a promise that the balance would be cleared in Scotland.
The remaining group comprising largely of long distance runners, which jets out on Thursday, is much better off having signed for all the cash before departure.
The games run from July 23 to August 3 2014.
