Mbarara Man Stabs UPDF Soldier to Death

A man has surrendered to Mbarara police after stabbing a UPDF soldier to death.

The suspect is Boaz Atamba, a son to a prominent Mbarara businessman and resident of Lubiri cell. Atamba reportedly stabbed Lance Corporal Michael Angunyu to death on Sunday night at around 10pm a few meters from Mankenke barracks in Mbarara municipality.

Major Ronald Kakurungu, the second division army spokesperson says the soldier met his death as he was returning to the barracks from an evening walk. According to Kakurungu was transferred recently to Mbarara from Bundibugyo district.

He dismisses claims that Angunyu was killed while trying to break into the suspect’s house.

Hillary Kulayigye, the Rwizi regional police commander says Atamba surrendered at Mbarara central police station after committing the gruesome act. He says the suspect will appear in court on charges of the murder once investigations are complete.

Kulayigye says they are investigating to establish how the UPDF soldier found himself at the murder scene. Atamba maintains he killed the soldier in self defense as he was trying to break into his house at night.
