No Elective Office For NRM Party Secretary General

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus has resolved that the party Secretary General, Treasurer and their Deputies should not run for any elective office. The three office bearers will also not be appointed for any government office.

The resolution was adopted by Monday’s NRM Caucus meeting at State House Entebbe following debate on the Party Primaries report submitted to the president recently.

The report recommended that the post of the party Secretary General is a demanding office which needs full-time devotion from the office bearer.

The party secretary is a senior official of the party charged with overseeing both the daily organizational and political decision making processes.

The Current secretary General, Amama Mbabazi, is a parliamentary representative for Kinkizi West and has served as Prime Minister in Central Government until his removal over a week ago.

The adopted recommendations would imply that he forfeits the Parliamentary seat is he wishes to retain the secretary General’s office.

Kinkizi East MP Chris Baryomunsi, a member of the seven-man committee that generated the report further reveals that all NRM Executives at District and sub County levels will not run for any elective office starting with the 2016 polls.

He says the strategy is to separate NRM activities from State activities.

Meanwhile, the NRM party is undertaking fresh registration of its members across the country as it develops a new party register in preparation for 2016.

As the exercise continues, the party will also get a new electoral commission. Members are however rooting for an independent and well facilitated electoral commission that will improve the manner in which polls are handled, Baryomunsi adds.
