You might think that robbery was reason enough to seek repentance for your sins.
But when a gang of armed thieves realised they had unwittingly pulled over the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, even that didn’t stop them carrying out their heist.
Cardinal Orani Joao Tempesta escaped injury yesterday when three gunmen stopped his car while he was being driven to a radio station to participate in a debate.
Rio archdiocese spokesman Adionel Carlos da Cunha said the robbers took the cardinal’s cellphone, ring, crucifix and pen.
‘They recognised the cardinal, apologised, but went ahead with the robbery anyway,’ Cunha added
The archdiocese’s photographer, a seminarian and the cardinal’s driver were also held up, although none was hurt.
They also stole the seminarian’s cassock and the photographer’s cameras.
The assailants blocked the cardinal’s car less than one mile from his residence in the neighbourhood of Sumare.
Police later recovered the stolen goods except for the cameras.
After the assault, Tempesta proceeded to the radio station and took part in the debate.
Meanwhile, the three other victims went to the police station to report the incident.
