Katwiremu was picked up on Tuesday by court bailiffs on his way from his Bugolobi home in Kampala to parliament and whisked off to Mbarara chief magistrate’s court.

According to Gabriel Byamugisha, the counsel for Katwiremu says the legislators appeared before Phillip Odoki, the Mbarara chief magistrate who released him on bond after he agreed to clear the money within six months.

Katwiremu’s debt arises from an election petition filed by water minister professor Ephraim Kamuntu in November 2012 before Mbarara high court.

Professor Kamuntu dragged Katwiremu and the NRM electoral commission to court for electoral malpractice during the 2011 NRM primaries.

Despite the fact that, Kamuntu’s petition was not heard, Justice Andrew Bashaija nullified the primary election results based on a similar petition filed by Naume Kibajju against her rival Rosemary Nyakikongoro, the Sheema District woman MP and NRM electoral commission.

As a result, president Museveni intervened and reconciled the two parties. He also appointed Kamuntu minister so to allow Katwiremu to contest the Sheema county MP seat on the NRM ticket without facing internal resistance.

Museveni asked Kamuntu to with draw the case against his rival and the NRM electoral commission in vain.

According to Katiremu, the Kamuntu’s lawyers of Bashasha and company advocates went ahead and sought court costs amounting to 138 million shillings.

Katwiremu has vowed to drag Kamuntu to the NRM disciplinary committee. However, Kamuntu’s lawyers say their client is entitled to the costs, which were awarded by court.
