Police in Mbale arrested two nursing officers for reportedly forging HIV results
Diana Nandawula, the Elgon Regional Police Spokesperson identified the duo as 30-year-old Annet Nabifo and 31 –year-old Harriet Namulunga all working at Alliance Medical Clinic in Nauyo, a suburb of Mbale town.
She said the suspects were arrested on Thursday after a trap set by the police and the HIV Termination Technology organization to prove claims that they were involved in forging HIV results.
The organization, an NGO working to eliminate HIV transmission, is currently in the district to monitor clinics and other health facilities in regard HIV management.
Nandawula explained that Mbale district health department, HIV termination technology and police had received information that couples especially those preparing for marriage were visiting the clinic to know their HIV status but some would bribe personnel to get results indicating that they are negative even when they are HIV positive.
Yesterday, two police officers who pretended to be a couple were sent with money to the clinic and were given results slip indicating that they are negative even when they were not tested. as a result, the two were arrested.
The suspects are being held at Mbale Central Police station awaiting the completion of investigation into their case.
Early this year, the British Broadcasting Corporation carried a story from undercover investigations in Kampala showing the wide spread doctoring of HIV results.
During the investigations, various clinics and printers were visited where they paid for the results without being testing.
In July this year, six quack health workers in Mbarara, accused of doctoring HIV results were also arrested.
They are Amos Twinomujjuni of Guardian Medical Center, Babrah Ashaba an assistant Nursing officer at Adventist Ishaka Hospital, Gabriel Mujuni, a quack doctor at Bright Future medical center in Mbarara town, Ivan Taremwa of Betta Medical centre and Monic Tukamushaba, a health worker at Biharwe Health center 11 in Kashari County.
