As dusk draws near, tranquility has finally returned at Nkumba University in Entebbe after police quelling a strike that was staged earlier today by students.

According to police, some property was destroyed and some of the ring leaders have been arrested.

Monday morning fired teargas to disperse students who were striking over increased retake and missed paper fees. The University management this semester increased retake fees from Shs 100,000 to 200,000 and missed paper fees from Shs20, 000 to Shs100,000.

By 11:50am (GMT) Police was still in running battles with rioting students in surrounding areas after forcing most of them out of campus. Just before lunch time, they blocked Entebbe-Kampala highway for more than 30 minutes prompting anti riot police to intervene.

Students smashed glass windows and doors and other university property. 10 students have so far been arrested by Police.

The students are also protesting the university management’s decision to block all students who did not register from sitting exams. Students at the university are expected to start exams this week.
