A special committee has been instituted to investigate a sex scandal involving the Parish priest of Ikamiro Church of Uganda in Kigezi Diocese Rev. Julius Kyarikunda.
Kyarikunda is accused of impregnating a parishioner Medias Akankwasa, whom he eventually abandoned with the child since last year.
Akankwasa alleges that in July 2013, Kyarikunda visited her home to inform them about the passing of a relative. However, they sought financial support from the priest which had to be picked from his home to enable the family travel for burial.
Akankwasa claims that on her way back, she was followed by the priest to Ikamiro playground demanding for sex. She adds that although she had rejected the advances, she eventually gave in after the priest promised to take precaution.
But eventually when she realized that she was pregnant, the priest distanced himself from the consequence and started warning her against revealing the secret to anyone. The matter was however reported to police raising a lot of upheaval within the church.
Christians have since called for disciplinary action against the priest for disrespecting church norms and values.
In the basis of this, the Bishop of Kigezi Diocese Rt. Rev. George Bagamuhunda announced a committee to take charge of the investigation. The Bishop says that although the embattled Priest has continuously denied responsibility for the pregnancy, the Committee will look at a number of options including a DNA test to prove or disapprove the allegations.
He says that the embattled priest will however continue playing his role in the church until the committee gets incriminating evidence against him.
The Bishop however did not reveal the composition of the committee set up to handle the scandal.
