The officer in charge of Nankondo Police Post, Sgt Godfrey Japyem has been killed.
Sgt Japyem was shot dead last night. Japyem’s SMG gun is believed to have been taken by his killers.
The incident occurred in Lwebitakuli sub County, Sembabule District.
Sgt Japyem was alone at the police post at the time of the attack. His two colleagues had gone on patrol.
Richard Ahabwe, a resident, says, the attackers fired in air forcing hundreds of people who had turned up for market day to scamper for their lives.
Ahabwe says it was difficult to identify the attackers because every Monday evening the trading centre attracts hundreds of people. Market vendors come from as far Masaka, Lwengo and Lyantonde to trade on the day.
Japyem is the second security officer in Greater Masaka to die on duty. Last week unidentified criminals attacked Kyazanga Prison in Lwengo District and killed Philip Mafabi who was guarding the area.
The Greater Masaka Regional Criminal Intelligence and Investigative Officer, Richard Mugwisagye, suspects that it might be the same group that attacked Kyazanga Prison.
Mugwisagye says that it is unusual for a police post to have one officer on duty. However, he declined to speculate if the attackers might have been aware that Japyem was alone on duty.
Japyem’s body has been transferred to Masaka Referral Hospital for post mortem.
