A group of over 40 senior National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders from Lwengo have petitioned NRM secretariat and State House protesting against exclusion from participating in the National Party Delegates Conference.
Last month, Muhammad Muyanja Mbabaali, the Lwengo District NRM Chairman and Christopher Kalemba, the Lwengo RDC conducted fresh registration of NRM leaders to take part in the upcoming NRM Delegates’ conference.
The NRM Delegates’ conference is slated for December 15th at Namboole Stadium. However, Muyanja Mbabaali and RDC Kalemba allegedly excluded several NRM leaders who don’t support them.
Some of those affected are MP Gertrude Nakabira, MP Isaac Ssejoba of Bukoto Midwest, David Baale Mukasa, the Chairperson Lwengo Entrepreneurship league, Cissy Namujju, the Secretary Lwengo Entrepreneurship league among others.
Muyanja excluded them on grounds that they supported opposition candidate Mathias Nsubuga during Bukoto South by-elections. Mbabaali also accuses them of promoting religious sectarianism in Lwengo.
Now, the excluded NRM leaders have protested against the decision by petitioning the NRM Party Secretariat and State House.
David Baale Mukasa one of the petitioners says they have decided to petition both the NRM Secretariat and State House demanding for fresh registration. He claims that the members presented to NRM party ahead of party delegates conference are not genuine.
Mukasa gives an example of Edward Tumusiime, the headmaster of Namabaale Primary School and Eddy Ssegujja of Malongo Primary school. He explains that although these people are civil servants who are not supposed to take part in active politics, they have been registered in their names as NRM delegates.
Mukasa says they want NRM and State house to scrutinize the lists presented to remove the fake NRM delegates and civil servants.
Cissy Namujju, another aggrieved NRM leader says their exclusion has escalated NRM party wrangles with several supporters vowing to join opposition. Namujju says they want NRM and State House to address this issue before the delegates’ conference.
Namujju intends to contest for Lwengo district Woman MP.
MP Nakabira, another affected NRM leader, wonders how Muyanja Mbabaali can exclude her yet she came to parliament on an NRM ticket.
MP Nakabira however says even if they do not include her on the list, she is prepared to attend the delegates’ conference.
However, Christopher Kalemba, the Lwengo RDC says he did not compile the list presented to State House and NRM party Secretariat. He explains that the list was submitted to his office by Hajj Muyanja Mbabaali, the Lwengo District NRM Chairman.
Hajj Muyanja Mbaabali has said he stands by the list he presented. He claims that the old list compiled by Umar Ssemwezi, the former Lwengo Administrative Secretary had errors. He says as result, they sacked Ssemwezi from that post and they started updating the registers in which they found several fake NRM delegates.
But MP Isaac Ssejoba of Bukoto Midwest one of those affected insists Umar Ssemwezi is still the Lwengo district NRM administrative Secretary. He says they have never sacked him and therefore he still has the powers of verifying and registering genuine NRM leaders.
The NRM Secretariat and State House have not yet commented on the matter.
