Five fishermen have died after their boat capsized on Sunday evening in Nyazala tributary, which connects to Lake Kyoga. Nyazala tributary lies between Chelekura sub-county in Pallisa and Kobuin sub-county in Ngora district.
Matthias Turyasingura, the Pallisa District Police Commander says the boat left Aleles landing site in Pallisa with nine fishermen butwas hit by strong winds forcing it to capsize. He says five fishermen were killed while the remaining fishermen escaped unhurt.
He identifies the deceased as Opio and Onya from Akwamor village, Okiring and David from Kalemen village and Kalamuka, a resident of Moruokume village in Agule sub-county Pallisa district.
Turyasingura has called upon the fishing community to observe weather before venturing out in the waters to avoid such incidents. Omuron Onebe, the L.C. 5 councilor Moruokume sub-county in Pallisa district says so far they have only recovered the body of Kalamuka.
By the time of filling this story, police had teamed up with members of the beach management unit to find the remaining bodies.
Emmanuel Emuron, the L.C.3 Chairperson Chelekura sub-county has expressed grief over the loss of the five fishermen. Emuron says that seven people have died in boat accidents in the district since the beginning of this year.
