The maid who pleaded guilty to battering a helpless toddler has earned herself four years in Jail. Jolly Tumuhirwe was convicted this morning when she appeared before Lillian Buchana, the Buganda Road chief magistrate.
Tumuhirwe was arrested and charged late last month after she was secretly filmed beating and kicking the 18-months old toddler.
Her video that was posted on social media drew outrage from the public and child rights activists. But in her defense, Tumuhirwe said she tortured the minor to revenge the mistreatment by her parents.
But in her ruling, Buchana said the claim by Tumuhirwe that she tortured the minor to revenge the mistreatment by her parents was not sufficient to justify her assault and mistreatment of a defenseless child.
She argued that, no amount of mistreatment from an adult to another should justify the kind of brutality the convict meted out on the child, adding that, the victim may never be able to know why such a degree of aggression was being transferred to her.
Buchana said she found the aggravating circumstances much stronger than the mitigating factors. She therefore convicted Tumuhirwe to four years in jail.
She directed prison authorities to watch over the convict to ensure that, she is reformed person by the end of her jail term.
Shortly after the ruling Eric Kamanzi, the father of the child said he was satisfied with the court ruling, adding that, the most important thing is that their child is well.
He said the sentence should serve as a caution to other maids with intentions of torturing minors placed under their care to know that the law will catch up with them.
