Uganda’s top badminton player Edwin Ekiring will face Finland’s Likka Heino in the first round of the 2015 Yonex Estonian International Open Championship next week.
Ekiring, who reclaimed Africa’s top Badminton spot after the rankings where released early this week by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) told our reporters (URN) from his base in Holland that he is ready to play well in Estonia.
The former Nsambya Sharing Centre player said he wants to continue doing well and accumulating points as he targets qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The tournament which opens the 2015 Badminton season will take place January 8-11 at the Tallinn City, Sports Hall, Kalevi Spordihall.
According to the draws Ekiring who is now ranked 169th in the world will face the winner between Croatia’s Tuka Zdenjak and Milan Ludikic from the Czech Republic in the second round if he outsmarts his first round opponent.
The other top players who have participated in past Uganda International Open Championships includes the Karunaratne brothers (Niluka and Dinuka) from Sri Lanka and Jan Frolich from the Czech Republic.
Uganda’s top female player Bridget Shamim Bangi who is now ranked third in the African continent will also start competition in the first round against a qualifier. Russia’s Olya Golovanova is ranked top in the women’s draw.
The Yonex Estonian International Open will help the two players improve their rankings at the world level and brighten their chances of qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
