Uganda national women’s volleyball team head coach Tony Lakony is racing against time to find setters at the team before it starts training next week.
CAVB, volleyball’s ruling body in Africa approved Uganda as the hosts of Women’s Zonal Qualifiers of the All Africa Games, with the finals to be held in Congo Brazzaville later this year.
The qualifiers will kick off on 20th and end on 27th April 2015.
Seasoned setters and starters Eunice Nuwabigaba, Veronica Nyiramugisha and Jesca Kaidu all out of action due to medical reasons forcing the coach to summon rookies Winnie Nakabuubi, Naluzze Betty, Adellah Asiimire and Akiteng Doreen who will need time to gel with the rest of the teammates as soon as possible.
The She Volleyball Cranes have tremendously improved over the years with the previous qualification campaign saw them make it to the final qualification round of the World Championship after beating Tanzania and Egypt in straight sets.
Coach Tony Lakony is however not so worried about the absence of the trio saying they cannot have any of them back soon but have plenty of potential in the new additions,” well we have time to practice early and find solutions in individual and team tactics and techniques,” he said.
Uganda will bank on the home support to push their way to the top where the top two countries shall make it to Congo Brazaville for the All Africa Games.
Kenya, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia and Egypt have already confirmed participation; teams are expected to arrive in the country on 20th April. Rwanda will host the men’s qualifiers
