President Yoweri Museveni says the army will now focus on resolving internal security threats.
He says the external threats that had previously preoccupied the Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces are now minimal.
Speaking in Moroto on the occasion to mark the 34th Tarehe sita, Museveni explained that the army had defeated insurgents in Northern Uganda, Allied Democratic forces and cattle rustlers in Karamoja.
He says now it is time for the army to deal with criminals in towns and in the rural areas. Museveni said the murders like that of Namayingo LC3 chairperson are unacceptable.
In the case of Karamoja, he said the killing that were rampant in Karamoja due to illicit guns have now been minimized with Karamoja region now getting integrated to other parts of the country.
Museveni also defended the deployment of the army in agricultural extension saying they will ensure that there is improved household incomes through farming.
President Museveni congratulated the army for the battles saying asking Ugandans not look at the 34 years only but talk about the struggle against Amin in the 70s.
The event was held under the theme, “Celebrating the integration of Karamoja into the national economy, dividends of disarmament through partnership of people and the forces for social economic transformation.”
