China, Africa have tremendous potential for cooperation – M7

President Yoweri Museveni has said there is tremendous potential for cooperation between China and Africa which is very beneficial and will help bring stability to the world.

“There is tremendous potential for cooperation between China and Africa which is very beneficial and will help bring stability to the world.

There is more solidarity with China. With more capacity, China is assisting us deal with the basic programmes which other friends did not care about like infrastructure,” he said.

The President was addressing the student community at the China Foreign University in Beijing.

The President who gave a rich in-depth history of the colonization of Africa and its gradual independence described China’s policy in Africa as excellent as it addresses some of the strategic bottlenecks faced by the continent including ideological orientation, inadequate infrastructure (Lack of electricity, railways, roads etc) lack of industrialization and small internal markets on account of excessive fragmentation by colonialism.

“Now that China has undergone socio-economic transformation, interaction with Africa is beginning to take shape of trade, investments by China in Africa, tourism and technical cooperation. These forms of interaction are smart ways of supporting one another,” he said.

The President who was flanked by the Chinese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Zhang Ming and the Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Qin Yaqing said Africa’s economies are growing, the lack of electricity and high transport costs notwithstanding.

“Now that we are addressing the strategic bottlenecks, we can cooperate with China meaningfully for mutual benefit.

The President said Uganda is working with Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi under the EAC and with other 26 countries to create COMESA for market integration.

He said they have also emancipated the Private sector which is now overwhelmed by the vast array of opportunities and are now concentrating on real estate, transport, hospitality and trading.

Prof. Qin Yaqing said they were honoured to have the President at their university and said he hoped this would deepen the friendship between the two countries.
