Parliament has launched its annual two-day Health event with the theme ‘Promoting Nutrition and Body Fitness’.
The event kicked off with a health run from the Parliament South-wing parking, flagged off by Hon. Rosemary Sseninde on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament on Tuesday, 17th March, 2015.
The participants in the 2 kilometer run who included Members of Parliament and Staff received refreshments like fresh water and other handouts on return.
The Senior Medical Officer of Parliament, Dr. Fred Bawulira Kapaata encouraged the Members of Parliament and staff to eat lots of fruits, vegetables and also engage in physical exercises to avoid developing lifestyle related diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
He added that when one is an adult, the body stops growing vertically and starts growing horizontally and as such it is very important to be conscious when choosing what to eat.
“One does not need to store for the future, eat only what the body needs at a time,” Dr. Kapaata stressed.
Hon. Rosemary Seninde in her remarks while launching the event echoed the advice that the traditional health days are is intended to create awareness among the Parliament community and the public to appreciate that their health is their responsibility.
She also proposed that the Parliament of Uganda establishes with a health club to see to it that such activities are continuously practiced.
Seninde reminded the members that diseases like HIV/AIDs are real so people should test in order to be able to know their status and preserve their health
“Healthy living is a determinant of happiness and this is why it is critical that all Members of Parliament are healthy in order to reliably serve the country,” She added
The ceremony was then opened to the participants for Voluntary Counseling and testing (VCT), blood donation, eye checkup, dental checkup, male circumcision and general health check-ups.
