President Yoweri Museveni has commended Bodaboda riders for their specialization and good role in the transport industry.
He made the comments yesterday at the Mbarara Booma Grounds when he addressed the members of the Mbarara Municipality Bodaboda Movement Association and wheelbarrow pushers.
He pledged a donation of Shs.100 million to boost the activities of Bodaboda riders and wheelbarrow pushers.
“The NRM Government declared war against poverty 20 years ago. In 1995 I guided you over the issue of household poverty eradication.
One of the major factors that have contributed to poverty in Mbarara district and the country at large is that people have continued to practice subsistence farming,” he said.
He noted that modern life requires people to have funds adding that the local Ankole cattle can generate income if reared on a large scale.
The President thanked Ms. Betty Komuhangi for mobilizing the members of the Association into a productive group. He, however, cautioned them in particular and wananchi in general against the practice of performing agricultural activities without proper calculations.
He cited a maize farmer who can only generate Shs.2 million per acre of maize per annum adding that it would wastage of efforts for people to conduct such ventures on a small scale.
He revealed that in Masaka district it has been established that one acre of coffee has the capacity to generate Shs. 21 million per acre per year.
He again reiterated his call on people to work hard and ensure they muster capacity to provide food and income to their families.
He gave assurances that the NRM Government is committed to facilitating girls to embrace activities, like weaving, in order produce a variety of products for the market.
Turning to urban dwellers, the President advised them to acquire skills in weaving and carpentry as one of the modes in the fight against household poverty adding that Government is ready to facilitate them with the necessary resources to enhance their ventures.
He stressed the need for all people to actively participate in efforts to create wealth. He said that UPDF Officers would assist them in their agricultural activities.
President Museveni once again cautioned wananchi against the vice of land fragmentation that is commonly practiced after the death of family heads.
He advised them to ensure that they only share the proceeds accruing from the consolidated family land holdings instead of parceling the pieces of land into uneconomic areas.
Regarding the concerns by people that Mbarara Municipality’s lifeline River Rwizi is drying up, the President strongly advised residents to stop encroaching on swamps.
He reminded them to take care of the environment noting that it was crucial for their survival and the future generations.
He said that once they act on the issue of restoring the reclaimed swamps, the river water levels would return to normal.
State Minister for Animal Industry, Hon. Bright Rwamirama saluted the President for putting Uganda on the international map.
He thanked the bodaboda members present for appreciating what President Museveni has done for the country.
Mbarara Municipality MP, Hon. Medard Bitekyerezo commended the President for the building of infrastructure especially the construction of good roads, among others.
He was pleased to note that he has also ensured wealth and supplied electricity to the area.
The Chairman of Mbarara Municipality Bodaboda Movement Association, Mr. Ben Muhwezi, saluted the President for enabling them to execute their work in a good secure environment.
He said that they were committed to ensuring that the country continues progressing.
He pledged their loyalty and promised to support President Museveni during the 2016 elections and presented him a specially designed Tee-shirt to be used in the region when campaigns start.
