International Friendly Match:| Uganda 1-1 Gambia | Scorers: Robert Sentongo (61st Minute), Omar Jagne (73rd Minute)
In preparations for the 2017 Gabon African Cup of Nations qualifiers starting this Saturday, the Cranes have settled for a 1 all draw with Gambian Scorpions at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium match played on Tuesday evening.
Robert Ssentongo who nodded a Brian Umony cross past Gambian goal keeper, Jobe Modou in the 62nd minute sent the home side into lead.
It looked a substitute affair for the day as another brought in substitute Omar Jagne who had come in for Mustapha Carayul took the advantage in the 73rd minute over Cranes defender Shafik Bakaki after faltering with the ball in the defense to let him dribble past goal keeper Robert Odongkara before shooting in an empty net.
Because of a low tempo in the game during the first half, Cranes head coach Mltin Micho Sredojevic responded by introducing Robert Odongkara, Brian Umony, Yasser Mugerwa and Robert Ssentongo for Denis Onyango, Yunus Sentamu and Derrick Tekkwo respectively.
As the game progressed, Shafik Bakaki came in for Miya Farouk while Geoffrey Massa paved way for Polokwane skipper Boban Zirintusa during the dying minutes of the game.
Like before Micho had predicted a strong resistance from the Scorpions and indeed it happened.
“Gambia is a good team and they have really set up a good test for us, we had chances to take the lead during the first have but my boys failed to convert them, we took the lead in the second half though an error from Bakaki denied us a win. We are going to correct our mistakes and be ready to face Botswana for our group D 2017 AFCON qualifiers but it was a good preparation for the boys,” Said Micho after the match.
Cranes is to host Botswana on Saturday June 13th 2015 in their starting match for the 2017 Gabon AFCON qualifiers where they are placed with 2013 finalists Burkina Faso, Comoros and Botswana in Group D.
