Docus Ajok has won a gold medal in the 1500m race at the ongoing World University Games in South yesterday.
The 23 year old clocked a season best time of 4:18.53 ahead of Canada’s Gabriela Stafford who finished in a time of 4:19.27 and Russia’s Kristina Ugarova (4:19.78).
Ajok a student at Ndejje University was first disqualified from the 800m semi finals with the organizers having claimed she had stepped onto the line between lane one and two.
“We had pulled her out of the 1500m race which was a few hours apart,” Peninah Kabenge, head of delegation for Uganda’s based Universities at the tournament lamented.
Ajok becomes Ndejje University’s third athlete to land Uganda gold at an international event after Wilson Busenei Kipkemei who won gold in 500m, 10000 and half marathon in Izmir –Turkey in 2013.
Team Uganda is apparently ranked 39 with 5 medals out of the 143 nations and 2nd in Africa after Ivory Coast.
