Police has cleared Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential flag bearer aspirants Dr. Kizza Besigye and Mugisha Muntu to start holding public meeting as they prepare for the coming party presidential polls.
A letter seen by Red Pepper authorizing the meetings dated 13th July, 2015 signed by Okoth Ochola on behalf of the Inspector General of Police has been delivered to FDC.
“It is understood that these meetings are part of your internal process for the two candidates Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu and Dr. Kizza Besigye to compete with in the party so that the two, the party shall choose one flag bearer who will then proceed under S.3 of the Presidential Elections Act to engage in the consultative meetings,” the letter reads.
Police cautioned that the clearance does not dispense them from complying with other sections of Public Order Management Act.
The two are required to furnish police with information about full name and address of organizers of the proposed meetings, consent of the owner of the venue, proposed date, time and site of the meeting, the number of persons expected, and the steward of the meeting as the contact person who shall link with the district police commander.
Besigye was arrested on Thursday last week on his way to commence consultative meetings which forced his rival, Muntu to also cancel the same undertaking in protest.
