Government chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa yesterday afternoon told parliament that Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Aronda Nyakirima will brief house on crime preventers.
The group is under the stewardship of Uganda Police Force.
Nankabirwa’s promise came after a heated argument in which opposition legislators branded the group as “a militia” threatening Uganda security ahead of 2016 polls.
“There are various militia trainings going on up country, the militia pose a threat to our security,” Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga told the house.
He also said that there are trainings going on the jungles of Luwero and that the youths being trained are dressed in yellow shirts.
Hon. Kaps Hassan Fungaroo doubted the role of crime preventers when he asked; “Crime preventers are being trained, but when will they start preventing crime?”
A sarcastic Fungaroo said that the intention of “crime preventers come 2016 is to create crime; we in the opposition will prevent crime.”
Leader of Opposition Hon. Wafula Oguttu told the house that the youths being trained are already partisan, the training and selection of who joins is also partisan.
In recent days, President Museveni and Kayihura have been passing out hundreds and thousands of crime preventers in different districts.
