Legislators yesterday, Thursday 17th September 2015 paid glorious tribute to the Late Hon. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, the UPDF Representative and Minister of Internal Affairs, who passed away on Saturday.
In her communication to the House, the speaker Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga said that Parliament was mourning a brilliant and balanced legislator who contributed to the law making process.
“He was a very disciplined officer and I trust he was among the finest and best that UPDF produced. We as Parliament will miss the firm and spirited contributions by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Aronda Nyakairima” she said.
The Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business, Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda, who moved the Motion to pay tribute to the deceased, said that he dedicated the prime of his life to liberation, stability, unity and development in Uganda.
“ We are here today to celebrate the life of our fallen comrade. He was an honest, hardworking, result oriented,disciplined and dependable. He championed the National Identification Project and now all Ugandans can now own an identity card” he said.
Dr. Rugunda further stressed that because of his contributions to Regional Integration and Pan African ideas and aspirations, Gen. Aronda deserved the recognition of this Parliament and the nation at large.
The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Wafula Oguttu, noted that the late Aronda was a hands-on person, who demonstrated his love for technical prowess and unyielding devotion to his work.
‘He personally joined the frontline in Garamba Forest and inspired the combatants to uproot Joseph Kony from the base, finally bringing peace to Northern Uganda” he said.
Oguttu further informed the Members that Gen. Aronda became his great friend, in 1986 when as a journalist he wrote a story that didn’t please the government and Gen. Aronda questioned him, after which they departed as friends.
Hon. Gen. Katumba Wamala, the Chief of Defence Forces applauded his fallen comrade as a national leader, a calm, peacemaker who was accommodative of everyone’s ideas. He said that Aronda changed the welfare of the UPDF by starting the Wazalendo SACCO Foundation.
“He had an ear for everyone and hated tribalism. He was a good combatant and resilient officer. This was witnessed when he fought and defeated the LRA and he further led the team that settled the Migingo islands dispute.” Gen. Wamala said.
In the Motion, Parliament paid condolences to the family and friends of the legislator and took cognizant of his contribution to Uganda.
The late Hon. Aronda Nyakairima, 56, will be laid to rest in Rukungiri on Sunday September, 20th 2015.
