First Lady Janet Lauds Huawei Corporate Social Responsibility

Uganda’s First lady and Minister for Karamoja Affairs Janet Museveni has lauded the spirit of social responsibility and giving back to the community exhibited by Huawei Technologies Uganda.

The First Lady made this call on Thursday while receiving officials from Huawei Technologies Uganda at State House Nakasero. The officials were officially handing over to the First Lady the 40 desktop computers that were pledged by their Organization for administrative and education purposes in Uganda during the President’s State Visit to China in March 2015.

Mrs. Janet Museveni thanked Huawei saying the computers will be useful in teaching the children to communicate with the world through internet and the young people will be able to do business with the world.

She said Uganda will continuie to bulid on the relationship  and wondered when the Chinese Airline will open a route to Uganda  so as to strengthen trade between the two countries.

“We encourage other companies that do business in Uganda to have a component of social responsibility to show their good will to the people who contribute to their organization’s business growth“, she said.

The Managing Director Huawei Technologies Uganda Stanley Chyn said that investing in innovations, encouraging local talents through knowledge transfer, bridging the digital divide are not only Huawei’s  Corporate Social Responsibility strategy as a global ICT leader, but more of the obligation to Uganda Society.

He informed the First Lady that Huawei has been devoting themselves to the Corporate Social Responsibility activities for more than 10 years. It has been the biggest sponsors of the MTN Marathon since 2012 in its initiatives to run for water for Northern Uganda and Karamoja respectively. It has supported the Science and Technology innovations challenge in Makerere and also supported local talent through the UCC ACIA Awards.

Huawei currently employs over 100 employees and provides internship opportunities to over 40 Ugandan students every year with some getting employed by the Organization after the internship.
