Democratic Party President Norbert Mao cannot contest for Gulu Municipality Member of Parliament seat because he has no National Identity card which is a prerequisite for aspirants, the Electoral Commission said yesterday.
Mao who was sick during the national identity card registration process presented a voters Identity card to be nominated but it was rejected.
Addressing supporters at Gulu District Council Hall, he said after leaving hospital he tried contacting Internal Affairs Minister late Gen. Aronda Nyakairima who promised to sort the ID issue but died few days later.
On 16th October, Mao wrote a letter to the Internal Affairs State Minister James Baba requesting for the Issuance of the National ID.
In the letter, he noted that the Executive Director in charge of National IDs and the Operations Director said it is possible to exercise discretion of the ID to him but they required a written instruction from the minister.
