Gilbert Arinaitwe, the notorious police officer who smashed Besigye’s car during the 2011 walk to work protests has been redeployed.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth-Ochola on Wednesday revealed that Arinaitwe has been sent to the Directorate of Crime Intelligence headquarters, but without a specific position.
The 2011 Story
On April 28, 2011 at Mulago roundabout during the walk to work protests, Arinaitwe pulled out his pistol and crashed Dr. Kizza Besigye’s vehicle window glass into pieces.
He was not yet done with his flared temper; he unleashed pepper spray into Dr Besigye’s eyes and dragged him out of the vehicle. The pepper nearly made Besigye blind.
Bwana roughed him up and bundled him into a police pick-up truck like a chicken street thief. The images of the attack were so grim and caused public outcry.
Besigye was later admitted at Nairobi Hospital for treatment where he spent a week and underwent surgery to clean his eyes that had been affected by pepper spray.
Arinaitwe’s redeployment comes at a time when Uganda is headed to 2016 presidential elections.
