NRM Attack Bishops over Free Besigye Pressure

National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Mary Mutesi has responded to church leaders who are calling government to free Kizza Besigye saying they are abusing the church pulpits.

Mutesi who was The National Resistance Movement (NRM) campaign Task Force Deputy Spokesperson while appearing on NBS TV today morning argued that abuse of church pulpits has forced people to follow “counterfeit preachers.”

“There’s too much abuse of the pulpit to an extent that many people are resorting to following counterfeit preachers,” she argued. Adding; “Why should a bishop in Kasese be more concerned about Besigye instead of his flock which is living in fear?”

“Bishop Niringiye stepped aside when he chose to become an activist. Those who want to speak out should also step aside,” she noted.

A number of church leaders while delivering Easter message asked government to free Kizza Besigye who has been incarcerated at his Kasangati home since 18th February presidential elections.

Masaka Diocese leader Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa asked government to respect Kizza Besigye rights while Church of Uganda Archbishop Stanley Ntagali called for his immediate release.

The government-church relationship soured after the presidential elections over the latter’s criticism.

Last week while speaking at the official launch of the National Population and Housing Census 2014 final results released by Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Museveni asked church leaders to spend less time abusing him.

“I urge all bishops and other media to spend at least 30% abusing Museveni but 70% talk about the future. I have survived 90% abuse.”
