Government has promised salary increment to public universities non-teaching staff, Keith Muhakanizi, the permanent secretary to the treasury said yesterday.
The agreement came in a meeting between The Public University Non-Teaching Staff Executive Forum (PUNTSEF) representatives and minister of finance planning and economic development.
The meeting was also attended by Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura
In a letter issued after the meeting, Muhakanizi said beginning with financial year 2016/2017, salaries for non-teaching staff of public universities will be enhanced in tandem to salaries of teaching staff in public universities.
Muhakanizi also note that arrears arising out of non-payment of enhanced salaries of the non-teaching staff for financial year 2015/2016 will be considered beginning with financial year 2016/2017.
The meeting came on the heels of the on-going strike by university non-teaching staff which paralysed at all public universities on Monday.
The public universities non-teaching staff strike came a week to start of end of semester examinations at major universities including Mbarara, Makerere, Gulu and Kyambogo on Monday 9th May, 20116.
Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda in August last year promised non-teaching staff that their salaries would be increased in the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 fiscal years.
