Machar Survives Assassination

A South Sudanese minister has revealed that the now former First Vice President, Riek Machar survived an attempt to bump him off.

Mabior Garang, the oldest son of former SPLA leader John Garang, the late South Sudanese rebel leader revealed Thursday morning that Machar who has since left the war torn country survived assassination.

“The opposition would like to announce the successful evacuation of the legitimate FVP Dr. Riek Machar Teny-dhuorgon after the botched attempt to assassinate him and abrogate the ARCISS…he has been with the SPLM/SPLA IO Forces being hunted by “dark forces” loyal to individual Generals in the IG…the SPLM IO is hopeful that the ARCISS can be implemented and the TGONU reinstated,” Mabior who also doubles as Water Minister he wrote on his Facebook page.

His revelation comes hours after it emerged that Machar had fled the country, a development he confirmed. Machar had initially fled the capital, Juba, during the violence in July, demanding a neutral force be deployed to keep peace and guarantee his safety.

The fighting erupted less than a year after a peace deal was signed to form a unity government and end the civil war.

It was bodyguards for Machar and President Salva Kiir’s presidential guards who fought each other, sparking days of violence in July.

Hundreds of people died and more than 100,000 fled across the border.

Rampaging soldiers are also said to have assaulted and raped women.
