Museveni Receives Petition to Scrap Off Presidential Age Limit
President Yoweri Museveni has received a petition to scrap off presidential age limit from a group of NRM supporters.
The development was confirmed by Senior Presidential Press Secretary Don Wanyama while appearing on NBS TV, today morning.
“As he left Kyankwanzi yesterday, Museveni was handed the age limit removal petition, received it but didn’t comment,” said Wanyama.
“I see nothing criminal or illegal about people calling for an amendment. Law is not cast in stone.”
If the bid is successful, it would clear the president, who will be 77 years in 2021, to contest again.
Museveni has so far remained a little cagey about his political future after 2021. He has insisted that he will “follow the constitution.”
In 2012, President Yoweri Museveni said he will not contest for the presidency again when he clocks 75 years, the age limit in the Constitution of Uganda.
“After clocking 75, I will not support the lifting of the age limit to allow me to contest for another term of office.” Museveni said while appearing on NTV.
In 2015, FDC icon Dr. Kizza Besigye warned that President Yoweri Museveni will seek to remove constitutional presidential age limit in order to remain in power.
He said this while on his campaign trail in Sironko district.
