Besigye, Wife Snub Parliament Awards Ceremony

Uganda’s Opposition icon Rtd Col Dr. Kizza Besigye and his wife Winnie Byanyima have snubbed today’s ceremony where Parliament has awarded Golden Jubilee medals to current and former legislators.
Both Besigye and Byanyima are former legislators and featured on the awardees list published by Parliament.
Recently, Parliament announced that the duo would be recognized for their contribution towards the country’s development.
However, they have not showed up since they are on international trips and could not make it to Kampala Serena hotel for the awards ceremony.
Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the FDC spokesperson, yesterday said Besigye is out of the country until September 29 while Byanyima is in the United States of America.
“Col. Dr. Besigye will be back on September 29 and we are mobilizing our supporters to receive him at Entebbe Airport. As far as I am concerned, Byanyima is in America,” said Ssemujju, adding that he was not aware of the duo delegating anyone at today’s ceremony.
However, there have been allegations that Besigye adamantly refused to turn up for the medal saying it’s not something he is yearning for at the moment.
Byanyima is former Mbarara Municipality MP while Dr. Besigye was a member of the National Resistance Council (the interim parliament after NRM captured power in 1986) and the Constituent Assembly, which debated and made the 1995 Constitution.
