The Uganda women national team (Crested Cranes) yesterday mauled the poor Zanzibar with a 9-0 win in the group stages of the CECAFA Women’s Championship in Njeru, Jinja Eastern Uganda.
Uganda feasted on Zanzibar after losing 4-0 to Kenya on Sunday.
It was under intense pressure to put their mistakes right against Zanzibar.
There was a little distress for the cheering home crowd as the Zanzibar Queens seemed to defend resolutely in the first half but Fatuma Khatibu handled the ball in the box to gift Uganda a penalty.
Hasifa Nassuna, stepped up and her conversion in the 41st minute started a spectacular relapse for the Zanzibar defence.
“We have different plans for each game, we played a 5-4-1 against Kenya so here we went with a 4-4-2 because we wanted to win,” coach Majidah Nantanda explained her decision to include Christine Nambirige and Rhine SS striker Fazirah Ikwaput among her forwards.
“The efforts of the girls are really commendable because even though the first goal came late they kept calm and got the result we needed,” Nantanda added.
Nassuna scored four, while Ikwaput and US-based Laki Otandeka, who slowly but surely grew into the game, grabbed braces.
Nambirige scored the other goal as Uganda set up for a mouthwatering final group tie against Burundi, also on three points after beating Zanzibar 10-1 on Sunday,
