Uganda’s former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party Presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye wants government dragged to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over its ‘impunity.’
Besigye made this revelation on Thursday while addressing his second press conference since his return on Monday from the one month long US-UK trip.
“I was detained unconstitutionally so that Mr Museveni takes power illegally. This impunity should be reported to the ICC,” Besigye said.
The former FDC president lost the disputed February 18, presidential elections that were won by his erstwhile political nemesis, President Yoweri Museveni. The country’s Supreme Court upheld Museveni’s victory in March after it quashed a petition by former premier Amama Mbabazi who also contested in the election.
Besigye who usually doesnt have kind words for Museveni attacked the president saying the latter is a ‘cancer’ to the region accusing him of creating conflict.
“As long as individuals become the state, when they collapse, the state collapses. Musevenism is a malignant cancer. is a malignant cancer to the region. He creates conflict & instability & comes in as the only one who can solve it,” Besigye said.
On Wednesday, Besigye was blocked from leaving his home by police officers who said said they were acting on orders. He however, revealed at the press conference that he will not allow to be confined to his Kasangati residence like a prisoner.
“I will not allow to be confined in my home. Not even the police will ever stop me from leaving whenever I want to,” he vowed.
