Opposition ‘Petitions’ UN Body Over Besigye Arrest
Uganda’s Opposition in Parliament on Tuesday instructed the Shadow Attorney General, Wilfred Niwagaba to petition the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) over the manner in which former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye was arrested in Entebbe.
Besigye, who returned to Uganda on Monday morning after a month’s trip to the United States and the United Kingdom, was arrested by security officers, shortly after he disembarked from a Kenya Airways flight (KQ Flight 410).
The former FDC party leader and four-time presidential candidate was immediately driven off in a police vehicle to his residence in Kasangati, outside Kampala.
Besigye revealed that he had been hounded out of the plane by what he described as goons who he said lifted him out of the plane like a terrorist.
While commenting on the incident, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LoP), Winnie Kiiza, announced that the Opposition will lodge a complaint with ICAO, the UN body that brings together aviation agencies and is charged with ensuring air safety.
According to Winnie, they will demand that Uganda’s CAA reveals which security agency commanded the arrest of Dr Besigye, the crime he had committed and his travel status given that he was not allowed to proceed through the proper immigration procedures to have his passport stamped.
