The third division court martial has sentenced Captain Michael Walumbe , a UPDF officer to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of murdering a civilian in Nakapiripirit District in May 2016.

After an operation to recover guns from cattle rustlers, Walumbe who was the Officer in Charge of the Military detach in Namalu sub-county, allegedly beat Moses Asio before tying him on a tree where he died.

Asio was allegedly a renowned cattle rustler in the area.

After the murder, Walumbe kept the deceased body in one of the grass thatched huts before being buried in the army detach.

Walumbe pleaded for a lighter sentence on grounds that he is both HIV and Hepatitis B positive, has a big family of 16 children and that he is the only bread winner of his family. He also apologized, saying he had made a mistake.

Col Frank Kyayonkya, the 3rd division court martial chairman, convicted Walumbe and a junior officer, warrant officer John Mushabe of murder contrary to section 188 and 189 of the penal Code Act. Mushabe remains at large.

After the judgment, Walumbe was stripped of his ranks and in line with the UPDF act, duly dismissed with disgrace from the army.
