Vendors Must Get Off The Streets of Kampala – Kamya

Minister for Kampala Betty Olive Namisango Kamya has instructed Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials to evict street vendors with immediate effect.

While addressing the media on Wednesday afternoon at the Uganda Media Centre, Kamya said the order follows numerous appeals by the public to restore order in the city.

“Vendors should vacate the streets, Road reserves, open spaces and walk ways,” said Kamya.

Kamya says the presence of street vendors has cost KCCA a loss of Shs37billion.

“Last year KCCA collected Shs87billion from taxes, but if we go on like this KCCA is likely to collect anything less than Shs50billion,” revealed Kamya

Kamya also said it’s not the responsibility of the government to relocate vendors.

She says they should go to markets that were built by government

“Vendors are advised to register at the available markets with management of the site markets in order to be allocated space.”
